Grading Standards

How We Grade Records

Every record at Vinyl Tavern is graded by hand using the Goldmine standard — media and sleeve graded separately, every time. If it says VG+, it plays like VG+.

M
Mint
Media Perfect and unplayed. Still in shrink wrap. Essentially impossible on used vinyl.
Sleeve Absolutely perfect in every way.
NM
Near Mint
Media Nearly perfect. Plays flawlessly with no surface noise whatsoever. Minimal handling marks.
Sleeve Nearly perfect with only the most minimal signs of handling.
VG+
Very Good Plus
Media Shows some signs of play. A few light marks visible under direct light. Sounds excellent — no distracting noise.
Sleeve May have slight seam splits, minimal writing, or light ring wear. Still displays well.
VG
Very Good
Media Some light surface noise on quiet passages. Plays through completely without skips. A solid, honest copy.
Sleeve Visible signs of wear — ring wear, seam splits, writing possible. Still intact.
G+
Good Plus
Media Plays with consistent surface noise. Still musically enjoyable. Best for rare titles where condition is secondary.
Sleeve Heavy wear, possible tape, writing, or damage. Noted in listing detail.
G
Good
Media Significant noise throughout. Plays without skipping but clearly worn. Priced accordingly.
Sleeve Heavily damaged. May be a cut-out, taped, or severely worn.

We err on the side of caution when grading. When in doubt, we grade down. Questions about a specific record? Contact us.
